I needed a place to show how near and dear to my heart she was and will always be. She indeed was the best clay kitty ever. You'll know what I mean as you see the pictures! She loved clay and could always be found sleeping on my clay tables. I will miss her...
Welcome
If you would like to learn more about my process as an artist and ceramist you are in the right place. I will outline my process on specific pieces and give you insight into how they were created. You can also find out more about me as a person, what I'm interested in and other great artists selling their work on Etsy. Enjoy!

In Memory of my beloved Clay Kitty, Athena
One of my cats, Athena, has no been missing for just about 2 weeks. Anyone who knows me, also knows I have a huge place in my heart for my cats. I am sure that she will not be coming back, as I think she was taken by a fox. She is the second cat on the street to have gone missing this summer and multiple neighbors have seen a fox about, due to the nearby chicken coop.
I needed a place to show how near and dear to my heart she was and will always be. She indeed was the best clay kitty ever. You'll know what I mean as you see the pictures! She loved clay and could always be found sleeping on my clay tables. I will miss her...

Summer Craft Fairs
This past weekend I took part in a great little craft fair which was part of the Shaker Hill Apple Festival in Alfred, Maine. It was fairly well attended. This was my booth set up, which was my best yet I think. I was disappointed a bit in the turn out, but more so in the customers willingness to buy. I had many many people say how beautiful my work was and how great the colors were, but very few sales. I think I had 6 sales in two days! Now, I made my money back and then some, but it's still not enough. I should be doing better. So, my question is why? Why did I not sell more?
New, Candy Apple dish ware, well received |
Did people not really like what I was selling?
No, I think they did. I had so many genuine comments, that it would be really hard to believe they were not telling the truth. Okay, that's not it.
Did I offer too many different types of items?
Maybe. I have never been an artist who settles on doing the same thing over and over. I am trying to create for myself different lines of work that I can split up for different shows and different seasons. I'm not quite there yet.
New, Spring Lizard Collection |
New, Lizard Earth Collection, well received |
Things I make: Bird baths and feeders, mirrors, plaques, bowls of all sizes, vases, jars, mugs, incense burners, platters, pendants, magnets, pins, and rings. I think that is it.
I did hear that more than 7 types of items can be distracting to a buyer. So, it's possible this drove some people off.
Does not running credit cards hurt my sales?
Yes, definitely. I lost a $30 sale because of this. I was very disappointed and a little upset, since I spent 10 minutes talking with this woman, who did not ask upfront.
Although, I still do not understand those who go to a craft fair without cash or their checkbook. I never have gone to a craft fair without cash in my pocket. But I suppose it is the new way to do business.

The Economy Sucks
Yes. Yes, I know... It does. No one needs to tell me, after loosing two teaching jobs due to budget cuts.
Oh, and my favorite one! People don't think I make it all!
Yeah, for real. I had one woman ask me if I made ANY of it? Really? I guess some people just do not understand the concept of JURIED CRAFT FAIR! (For those of you that don't know, it is not your fault. I blame the government for underfunding the arts and the local schools that cut art programs so our children grow up with no concept of what goes into creating an artwork or piece of pottery. And with all the pick and paint pottery places....Well, people probably think I buy it and paint it... Oh wait, some people actually do that and call it handmade! Okay, that's enough)
HANDMADE = in my case, means that I take all my dry clay pieces, reconstitute them in a bucket of water, dry it on a slab of plaster, cut it and shape it into weighed pieces, throw/form it on my pottery wheel, let it dry to leather hard, turn it over and trim the bottom, let it dry out completely, check it one more time, sanding if need be, fire it (for about 8 hours), (let it cool down about 24 hours), glaze it, let it dry for another 24 hours, then fire it a second time... Price it, pack it and travel to bring it to a show or set it up to take pictures and put it one etsy.
This is NOT and easy thing I do or any other crafter does. It costs money. It takes a lot of time. We put our heart and soul into this. I do not take any opinion, comment or look lightly when I am at a show. Please respect what we do.
Anyway.... one other thing I am going to try to do is to create a slide show on my digital frame and bring it with me to shows. That way people can see my process and that I do, in fact, create everything they see.

I have no idea what I am doing
I am full of questions today. In part to an email I received about how I did something stupid and went against Etsy policy...In short, which those who know me, know I don't do well. I did something stupid out of my frustrations and a very kind person put me back on track. I'm actually really upset about what I did and there is nothing that I can do to make it better, except not do it again...Okay okay, I sent out convos to shops who hearted me and I'm sorry if you were one of them. I won't be doing it again...
Anyway... full of questions (and frustration)
*How do I make money doing what I love? (loaded question, I know)
*How do I promote my Etsy store? I have tried facebook, but I think more and more people just hide me because they don't care or don't get what I'm doing. Spring cleaning of my friends is in order!
*How can I possibly pay attention to all the blogs that I enjoy, the teams I am a part of, list new items, and pay attention to my children? I can't! My kids need to come first, I know that. There is just so much to do online and really... how much of it do I need to be doing to bring business to my shop?
*Do I focus on craft fairs or Etsy?
*Should I and do I have time to offer pottery lessons at my home this summer?
*Are my children going to appreciate all that I do when they are older or resent me for spending so much time doing my art and not playing with them?
*How can I justify continuing to make things, while I have so much in stock already that I have not sold?
*Do I need a product line that all looks the same, or find a knish to market my things, or can I just keep creating?
*Am I going to run out of questions soon?
*Will I do better selling my antiques at a flea market than selling my pottery at a craft fair? And if so, should I be happy about that or sad?
*Should I be updating my tax info and charts for my business right now instead of typing on my blog?
*Do I have to claim money for taxes that I make in sales to friends and family?
*How do I get more readers to my blog?
*Should I be tweeting? I don't even get it! I don't have a cell phone that can tweet so what is the point?
*Speaking of cell phones, should I get an iphone and square so I can take credit cards at shows? Or a smartphone or an ipad. I want an ipad, that would be so cool and easier for people to see!
Okay, I'm exhausted now, should I take a nap? Just kidding. What I really need to be doing is glazing, but I can't yet, since my little was is up. I'll have to wait until nap time.
I wish it wasn't raining as well. My little one really wants to go outside. I guess that I'll go do some housework until it's time to go to the Mother's Day thing my older son's preschool is having. It should be cute. It should put a smile on my face and I think that's what I really need right now!

Poor start to the Craft Fair Season
This past weekend, I did a craft fair which did not turn out too well. It is so upsetting when you loose at a show, especially knowing that it was just due to the small crowd. There was nothing that I could do to make it better. The good thing that came out of it, which I always have to find the good things, was that I figured out what I need to do to improve upon my displays for future shows.
I plan on displaying some of the pendants higher up next time, to bring attention to all the pendants nicely displayed in my lovely old wine box! I really wanted a "Riffle through me" sign, about half way through the show!
My new birdbaths drew a lot of attention, which is great, but I think the price scared some people off. I was also near the back of the show and there was a vendor right at the front with hanging birdbaths which were much cheaper, since they were made from a mold.
Overall, I took away from this show some great information on displays and signage. And don't do Spring shows! Everyone wants to be in their gardens, not in a stuffy gym!
<---Look Dad, at the top, I displayed my sales tax sign! Aren't you proud! I even collected it on my one sale!
I hope I don't sound too bitter! My coffee maker is on the fritz too! Not a good combination.

It was very distracting without a wall behind me. Some vendors had great curved walls behind them which helped to make their shop stand out and make it look more like marketplace then people set up with stuff on an indoor track!
